Jo is a partner in our London office and is a specialist in marine insurance and shipping litigation. She qualified in England and Wales in 2004.

Acting predominantly for global insurers and Lloyd’s syndicates, Jo’s primary practice is marine coverage work and this incorporates hull, cargo and specie, marine liability, charterers’ liability, war risks, mortgagee’s interest insurance (MII), yacht, builders’ risks and protection and indemnity (P&I) policies. She has been instructed by insurers and reinsurers in complex, multi-jurisdictional matters and having completed two secondments in the London market, has significant practical experience in the handling of the full range of marine claims.

Jo also has experience of acting for owners, charterers and their respective insurers on shipping litigation matters, including subrogated recoveries, defence and claims under charterparties and bills of lading.

She is also a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL).

Work highlights

  • Representing War Risks Underwriters in long running High Court litigation against the Owners of the vessel Brillante Virtuoso/ the mortgagee bank in respect of a total loss claim arising from the alleged hijack and loss of the vessel due to fire. The claim is defended by War Risks underwriters on a number of grounds including the wilful misconduct of the Owner.
  • Representing Hull & Machinery insurers in High Court litigation against the Owners of the vessel Atlantik Confidence/ the mortgagee bank seeking recovery of a significant total loss payment on the basis of claims in misrepresentation and restitution. Advised on complex issues of jurisdiction which were the subject of argument in the High Court and Court of Appeal.
  • Represented Hull & Machinery insurers in arbitration proceedings commenced by the Vessel Owners in respect of a disputed claim for the constructive total loss of the vessel. Advised on coverage, quantum and security for costs issues before concluding settlement of the claim on good terms.
  • Represented liability reinsurers in relation to the loss of a passenger ferry and over 300 passengers. In conjunction with overseas lawyers, advised on coverage and handling of multiple and complex claims relating to passenger, pollution, P&I and salvage liabilities.
  • Represented container terminals and their property insurers in relation to a number of successful recovery actions  arising out of damage sustained to shoreside cranes/other property as a result of negligent berthing of vessels.
