Dick is a Partner in our Chicago office, and an insurance specialist with over 40 years’ experience representing insurers throughout the US, Europe and Bermuda.
Today, his practice primarily focuses on the Bermuda insurance market, where he maintains strong relationships with many major insurers and reinsurers. Working on their behalf, Dick not only advises but also actively represents these insurers in cases involving large casualty losses – often handling multiple arbitrations, while providing policy and endorsement drafting and underwriting advice along the way.
Dick has been an integral part of some of the highest profile events of the past 40 years in the US, UK and Europe. In fact, he has represented insurers in connection many of the major losses excess liability insurers have encountered over that span. These include the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster, the Exxon Valdez disaster, the Piper Alpha explosions and fire, the Buncefield explosion, the mass litigation involving silicone breast implants, the Shell Nitro facility explosion, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the United Technologies/Pepcon rocket fuel plant explosion in Nevada.
Dick is also known for his work on numerous pharmaceutical /medical device losses, several large auto products serial losses involving major car manufacturers, various major property damage losses caused by defective agrichem products, and a number of large serial losses arising from defective building materials.
He is an award-winning co-author of The Bermuda Form: Interpretation and Dispute Resolution of Excess Liability Insurance, originally published by Oxford University Press in 2011, with a 2d, updated edition to be published in February 2018. Dick is also a regular speaker in insurance industry professional organizations, presenting internationally about current developments in insurance law.
Dick is a member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. He is an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association, Commercial Panel, a member of the London Court of International Arbitration and the AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society (ARIAS-US), and an elected member of the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance.
