Ian advises on policy coverage for insurers and reinsurers, commercial arbitration for MNCs and liability matters for hospitals. 

Ian’s insurance practice includes advising on energy, construction, engineering, D&O, professional indemnity, banker’s blanket bonds, medical malpractice and business interruption. He also advises on subrogation and has extensive experience in contentious matters relating to insurance and in all forms of dispute resolution including litigation, arbitration and mediation.

He has represented clients in a wide range of high-profile, complex matters in jurisdictions such as Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Korea, Macau, China, England, Mexico and Jersey.

Ian regularly speaks at industry events and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He has been ranked as a ‘Notable Practitioner’ by Chambers Asia Pacific since 2016.

Work highlights

  • Advising insurers in Thailand on coverage and subrogation for turbine breakdowns after multiple failures on different plants including issues relating to exclusions, basis of indemnity, waiting periods and fleet issues.
  • Acting on an arbitration in Hong Kong relating to US$60 million losses on London Metal Exchange, involving complex fraud issues and review of 250,000 documents using sophisticated document review technology.
  • Advising on allegations against directors of fraud, breach of fiduciary duties and negligence resulting from division of an MNC that recorded losses in excess of RM2 billion in Malaysia – Policy Limit was US$50 million.
  • Advising on a property damage arbitration in the Philippines regarding valuation and coverage relating to alleged US$130m damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan to manufacturing plant.
  • Advising insurers on allegations of professional negligence in relation to design of a hospital in Vietnam, including issues relating to control of litigation and buying off the claim.
  • Advising on an Industrial All Risks Policy in Malaysia relating to machinery breakdown and business interruption after gas turbine failure – including issues of fortuity, exclusions, claims co-operation and follow the settlements.
