An apprentice's perspective: Lily Manning

As proud global partners of this year’s Dive In Festival, and in support of the annual theme of #time4inclusion, we canvassed the views of some of our legal apprentices on life at Kennedys, their careers, and what diversity and inclusion means to them.

Our award-winning UK apprenticeship programme, launched in 2012, sees Kennedys actively recruit from schools and colleges and welcome people to the firm from the age of 18, is something that, according to Partner and Board member Suzanne Liversidge, “allows us to reach people from a much wider range of backgrounds who more accurately represent the diversity of those we serve”.

In the latest instalment of our Legal Apprentice interviews we spoke to Lily Manning, a Solicitor Apprentice based in our London office.

“I hope to complete my apprenticeship within the next four years through my studies at BPP Law School. Thereafter, I will be working towards becoming an established Solicitor within my team,” says Lily, commenting on her future plans.

Lily, who is part of Kennedys’ September 2014 cohort, works within the firm’s Healthcare Division in a team that handles a wide range of clinical negligence claims and employers’ and public liability claims where injury has occurred in a healthcare setting. As part of a global network, Lily’s team has regular contact with other healthcare experts within the firm. Now four years into her apprenticeship, Lily feels she is benefiting from the practical experience she has been getting at Kennedys.

As an apprentice, I am treated as a valued member of the team and treated no differently to other members of staff.

Lily says: “I enjoy the work that I am involved in. No two days are the same as there is such a great variety of work. I am kept closely involved in a range of work and feel I am gaining the relevant experience to assist me in becoming a Solicitor in the future.”

During the last two years, the firm has been awarded the ‘Top Employer - Law’ award at the AllAboutSchoolLeavers Awards in both 2017 and 2018. When asked what she was enjoying most about her apprenticeship at Kennedys, Lily shared her thoughts.

“My favourite part of the apprenticeship has been being able to learn whilst on the job. For me, that is the best way to learn and gain experience.”

This year marks the start of a two-year campaign, Awareness into Action. After three years of raising awareness of the business case for diversity and inclusion, the global movement now looks to harness the energy of previous years to encourage action throughout the sector.
