Justin Perry on volunteering, community and making an impact

As part of our International Women’s Day campaign, we spoke with Justin Perry in Philadelphia about how he helps colleagues to give back at Kennedys and what he has gained from being part of our global Thrive Together volunteering programme.

What is your role in the US Thrive Together programme and what inspired you to get involved?

My role is a Thrive Together Champion, and I work directly with the US Partner Sponsor (Elaine Whiteman Klinger) to organize and execute all of our US initiatives. I am also on the Board of the Philadelphia Chapter of the IICF (Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation).

At Kennedys, we are so fortunate that the firm not only supports our interests in giving back, but affords us working time to attribute to our efforts.

If you could share one message with employees this IWD about the power of volunteering, what would it be?

"A little bit goes a long way! At Kennedys, we are so fortunate that the firm not only supports our interests in giving back, but affords us working time to attribute to our efforts."

What has been the most rewarding/favourite volunteering opportunity you’ve taken part in so far?

I am so fortunate to say I have many opportunities I have been involved with to choose from, by my favorite is working with our local food pantry, Broad Street Love. Their model is based on what they call “radical hospitality”, and they welcome hundreds of unhoused community members to come in to their facility to have a restaurant-style experience and meal. The Philadelphia office has participated over the last few years, and we go and act as the host, waitstaff, bussers, etc. It is such a gratifying experience to serve home cooked meals to these folks, and to have conversations with them. It is a highlight of my year every time we do this work with the community.

Do you have an example where you have volunteered and learned valuable skills in return?

I feel as though I learn something new with every volunteering event I am able to participate in, both tangible and otherwise! I think the most rewarding skill I have fostered is that each and every person who benefits from my efforts deserves the same respect and hospitality as anyone else. And to be someone who can spread joy and respect on behalf of Kennedys is invaluable.

Where do you see opportunities for the firm to support communities in US?

As we continue to develop and grow our US Thrive Together initiatives, I think we have opportunities to expand our efforts in each office, not just the offices where we have a Thrive Together Champion!
