We asked our 2025 Sydney Graduates about what attracted them to our Australian Graduate Program, what a typical day at Kennedys looks like, and any advice they had for potential applicants.
Julie Hwang
What attracted you to Kennedys' graduate program?
I was drawn to Kennedys' strong reputation as a leader in the insurance space, both in Australia and internationally, and I was genuinely excited about the opportunity to learn from and work alongside practitioners who are recognised leaders in this field. Beyond the firm's reputation, what really stood out to me was the graduate program itself. Kennedys has a strong focus on providing graduates with structured, tailored learning and hands-on experience across different rotations. Even throughout the recruitment process, I never felt like "just a number", and it was clear that the firm truly values individuals who can make a meaningful contribution and bring their authentic selves to work.
What does a typical day look like as a graduate at Kennedys?
My day-to-day never looks the same at Kennedys. Some days I'm conducting legal research, drafting correspondence, or reviewing documents, while other days I'm attending client meetings, hearings, or conferences. I particularly enjoy the variety of clients I get to work with. Some days I'm assisting high-profile clients on complex matters, and other days I'm helping individuals with smaller-scale legal issues. The work is challenging and fast-paced, and the variety of matters and range of clients make every day engaging and rewarding.
What advice would you give to others wanting to apply?
Be yourself! Kennedys isn't looking for a single type of candidate, the firm values well-rounded individuals who can bring authentic perspectives and experiences to the firm. Don't try to provide answers you think they want to hear, but instead focus on showing what makes you unique. While your academic results and legal experience are important, what really makes you stand out are your personal attributes and mindset!

What attracted you to Kennedys' graduate program?
I was drawn to Kennedys’ graduate program because of the global opportunities it offers, including exposure to international work streams spanning multiple jurisdictions. The structured rotations were also appealing, as they ensured that graduates gain broad legal experience across different practice areas. From discussions with other firms, I learned that rotations are sometimes limited if a team decides to retain a graduate permanently, which restricts a graduate’s exposure. Kennedys' commitment to completing all rotations was particularly important to me since I didn't have any idea what I wanted to specialise in. The program gave me the opportunity to explore different areas and helped me identify where my interests lie.
What does a typical day look like as a graduate at Kennedys?
A typical day begins around 8:30am / 9:00am, I start by checking my emails and reviewing and listing the day’s tasks and the order they need to be completed in, including any unfinished work from the previous day. Around 9:30am / 10am the other graduate finishes their morning review and I often catch up with them plus other colleagues over coffee. The rest of the morning is spent completing outstanding tasks and starting new work. Lunch rolls around about 1:00pm, followed by a short walk with colleagues. From 2:00pm onwards I focus on completing any ongoing work streams, with the day typically ending around 5:00pm / 5:30pm. In my current rotation I sometimes have meetings with the London team around 7:00pm, so I go to the gym and return in time for the meeting. While this is my general routine, the work can vary depending on which team I'm working for and the client's needs, so you need to stay flexible and adapt to changing priorities—but that's all part of the fun.
What advice would you give to others wanting to apply?
One piece of advice I’d give to anyone applying for a graduate position is to really take the time to research the firm. Have a look at their LinkedIn, see what events they attend or sponsor, get to know the people who work there, read the partners’ profiles on the website, and explore the firm’s different practice areas. Doing this will not only give you insight into the firm’s values, the scale of its operations, and where it is heading, but it will also be valuable during interviews, as it demonstrates your genuine interest in the firm.
When interviewing, I would encourage applicants to show eagerness to learn and genuine curiosity about the firm they wish to work at. Whilst academic results are important, an applicant’s attitude may be the deciding factor on whether they land a position. Importantly, if you have any concerns or questions throughout the process, I also recommend reaching out to the early careers team for guidance.

What attracted you to Kennedys' graduate program?
Kennedys’ global reach was a major factor that attracted me to the firm. I love having the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the world and to learn from a wide range of industries and markets on a global scale. While insurance may initially seem niche, it truly touches every sector - there is no area you can’t explore within the insurance industry. This breadth of work makes Kennedys an incredibly exciting and valuable firm to be part of.
I was also drawn to Kennedys’ strong commitment to its graduates. From the outset, graduates are trusted with hands-on work and supported by approachable teams who are genuinely invested in your learning and development. The combination of responsibility, continuous guidance, and exposure to complex matters creates an environment where you can build confidence and grow as a lawyer.
What does a typical day look like as a graduate at Kennedys?
No two days are ever the same. As a graduate at Kennedys, you work across a variety of matters at different stages, which means each day brings new tasks and priorities. I always start my day by checking emails and usually a coffee run, whether that’s with my team, fellow graduates, or anyone in the office who’s keen to join! A typical day might involve preparing briefs for counsel or experts, drafting correspondence, attending conferences, summarising reports, or conducting legal research. There’s always something new to learn, which keeps the work engaging and rewarding. On top of that, there are regular events around the office, adding a fun and social element to the day and making the experience even more enjoyable.
What advice would you give to others wanting to apply?
Be confident in yourself and your achievements. I know the application process is nerve-wracking but approach it as a celebration of what you’ve accomplished and an opportunity to showcase your hard work to a firm that is genuinely eager to invest in your growth and development.
And remember, 'achievement' doesn't have to mean something extraordinary. Graduating from law school is an achievement in itself. Beyond that, I strongly believe in small wins, every experience has value, and each one contributes to what makes you a strong and well-rounded candidate!

What attracted you to Kennedys' graduate program?
Kennedys offers a unique opportunity for law students looking to work in an international firm within Australia. Having completed a double degree in International Studies and Law, I was looking to utilise my university experience in a graduate role. The graduate program at Kennedys was one of the few in Sydney that offered this experience, owing to the firm's international expertise and offices worldwide. The program has three rotations, which provides excellent variety on the types of matters and tasks you will be working on.
What does a typical day look like as a graduate at Kennedys?
A graduate at Kennedys can expect to have hands-on experience in their rotations. Tasks assigned often include drafting court documents and advice for clients, liaising with experts and relevant parties to a matter, conducting legal research and providing general support to their team. Graduates at Kennedys have a unique position of being supported in their learning and development whilst having autonomy and high levels of involvement in matters. The teams that I have rotated with have been incredible in their support and guidance with my learning experience.
