Ella Redfern on turning sport into social impact

This International Women’s Day, Kennedys is sponsoring four pairs to take part in this year’s Padel for Purpose event, raising funds for Raising Her Game. We spoke with Ella Redfern, who has been organising the event, about what “Give to Gain” means to her and the female role models who inspire her.

How are you giving back this International Women’s Day?

I’m giving back this International Women’s Day by raising awareness and funds for a remarkable charity that empowers young girls and amplifies the voices of underrepresented communities. I’m bringing people together friends, colleagues, and strangers alike to recognise the impact of this work and to create a space where we can learn from one another, celebrate women and girls, and support the opportunities this charity helps make possible for families and communities.

How are Kennedys involved with the Padel for Purpose event this year?

Kennedys are kindly supporting the event this year by entering four pairs into the tournament and sponsoring those employees to participate, including covering their tickets. In addition, the firm has made a charitable donation in support of the cause. I am delighted to have Kennedys involved and represented on the day, and I’m really looking forward to welcoming the participants to the event.

What can you tell us about ‘Padel for Purpose’ and the difference it aims to make?

‘Padel for Purpose’ is an event I am incredibly proud to organise in support of Raising Her Game, a charity dedicated to empowering and supporting women and girls through sport. The aim is simple: to bring people together in a positive, inclusive environment while raising funds to create more opportunities for young girls to thrive.

The difference we hope to make is both immediate and long-term: raising vital funds and awareness for Raising Her Game, while also strengthening networks and inspiring continued advocacy for women in sport and leadership. For me, organising Padel for Purpose is about turning enthusiasm into impact, using the power of sport to give back in a way that is both purposeful and lasting.

What charities will the ‘Padel for Purpose’ event be supporting?

Raising Her Game, a charity empowering young girls through sport.

What does this year’s theme “Give to Gain” mean to you?

"To me, “Give to Gain” is about recognising that when we invest in others, whether through mentoring, sharing knowledge, championing colleagues or supporting our wider communities, we don’t just help individuals succeed, we strengthen the culture and community around us."

This impact often extends far beyond the initial act of giving. It’s about creating opportunities, offering encouragement, and making space for different voices to be heard.

To me, “Give to Gain” is about recognising that when we invest in others, whether through mentoring, sharing knowledge, championing colleagues or supporting our wider communities, we don’t just help individuals succeed, we strengthen the culture and community around us.

Who are some female role models which have inspired you, and what lessons have you learned from them?

The first is my mum. She built an incredible career in what was, at the time, a very male-dominated industry. Watching her work hard, progress and ultimately build a successful career has shaped my understanding of resilience and determination. She has always balanced strength with kindness, she is driven, motivated and incredibly hardworking, yet also deeply caring. From her, I have learned that success is earned through consistency, perseverance and a strong work ethic, but that you never need to compromise who you are to achieve it.

Another role model for me is Darcy Bourne, GB hockey player and founder of Raising Her Game. She is one of the most determined and motivated women I know. What inspires me most is not only her success in elite sport, but how she uses her platform to create opportunities for others. Her journey hasn’t been without challenges, and rather than letting that hold her back, she has channelled it into building something meaningful to support girls progressing from grassroots to elite level.

Darcy embodies ambition with purpose. She has taught me the power of curiosity, of asking questions, of continually striving to improve and never becoming complacent. Balancing elite sport, university and running a charity requires discipline and drive, and she approaches it all with energy and kindness.

What message would you like to send to women who are just starting their careers?

To women just starting their careers like me, I would say stay curious and don’t underestimate what you’re capable of - you’re often stronger, smarter, and more prepared than you think. One thing I’ve learned from my mum and the experienced, professional women I work with is that growth comes from backing yourself even when you feel unsure. Keep navigating, keep learning, and stay true to who you are. Confidence and authenticity will take you further than you realise.
