Alexander is a legal director based in Kennedys’ Belfast office and is responsible for the Northern Ireland employment law practice. He qualified as a solicitor in Northern Ireland in 2013.

Alexander has extensive experience in the following area of practice:

  • Representing employers in employment disputes before the Industrial Tribunal, Fair Employment Tribunal and Court of Appeal.
  • Supporting businesses with day to day employment advice.
  • Advising on TUPE considerations arising from business acquisitions.
  • Representing businesses before the civil courts in discrimination claims arising from the provision of goods and services, in the field of education or from harassment.

Alexander’s expertise has been recognised through a number of external appointments which include:

  • Chairman of the Irish Football Association Player Status committee in which capacity he arbitrates in transfer and contractual disputes between clubs and players.
  • The Labour Relations Agency Independent Dispute Resolution Service panel of chairs.
  • Employment law tutor at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies.

Work highlights

  • Successfully representing a large charity before the Industrial Tribunal and Court of Appeal defending claims of whistleblowing and fixed term worker detriment.
  • Securing a strike out of claims of sex discrimination and unfair dismissal against a large sporting organisation on the grounds of employee status.
  • Successfully defending claims from two directors against a company alleging disability discrimination and whistleblower detriment.
  • Successfully represented a senior executive in a claim for disability discrimination and equal pay.
  • Successfully defended a large employer in respect of health and safety claims arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
