On 23–24 October 2025, Kennedys facilitated a two-day training programme on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Monrovia, Liberia. In collaboration with the Liberian Ministry of Justice and its ADR Programme, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and French Embassy also supported the training.
The programme marks an important step in the development of Liberia’s policy and legal framework, aiming to strengthen understanding and application of ADR mechanisms across government, judicial and private sector stakeholders. The sessions sought to heighten awareness of the latest trends in ADR and ensure that key actors are equipped to apply legal provisions in the most informed and effective manner possible.

 Topics covered during the training included:
•    Uses and advantages of ADR systems;
•    Issues of jurisdiction;
•    Navigating arbitral procedures;
•    Enforcement and recourse;
•    Investment treaty arbitration.
"While we can bring experience and insights from our work internationally, Liberia has its own identity, legal framework, culture and history that must be taken into account when applying dispute resolution mechanisms."
The sessions brought together representatives from across government, the judiciary, and the private sector, including the Liberia Revenue Authority, Liberia Chamber of Commerce, Liberian National Bar Association, American Bar Association, Ministry of Labor, International Bank (Liberia) Limited, Liberian Bankers Association, Liberia Maritime Authority and the Judiciary.
Partner Thomas Kendra, who led the training alongside Gobah A. Anderson, Director for the MOJ ADR initiative and Cllr. Moses Soriba, Director of the Judicial Training Institute, said: “From the beginning, I saw this as more of an exchange than a training session. While we can bring experience and insights from our work internationally, Liberia has its own identity, legal framework, culture and history that must be taken into account when applying dispute resolution mechanisms. The exchanges were lively and interactive, as the Ministry moves towards its goal of strengthening the range and quality of dispute resolution options available.”
The event was honoured by the presence of His Honor Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr. and Minister of Justice Oswald Tweh, who remarked during the opening session: “Arbitration is development in motion.”
We extend our appreciation to the Ministry of Justice’s ADR Program and its Director, Gobah Anderson, as well as all partners and participants who contributed to the success of the sessions.
