Anna is a Senior Associate based in our Sheffield office, joining Kennedys in 2013.

Anna specialises in regulatory defence work and has advised clients on a diverse range of health and safety and environmental investigations and prosecutions together with dealing with food safety and road traffic incidents. Anna regularly defends proceedings brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Environment Agency, local authorities and the Crown Prosecution Service for clients across all industries. Anna conducts her own advocacy wherever possible and is regularly instructed to represent clients at inquests.

Anna has acted for numerous companies and directors/senior managers in high profile prosecutions and is regularly instructed to advise on the conduct of health and safety investigations following serious incidents in the workplace. In addition, Anna has a strong knowledge of regulatory compliance matters, in particular environmental permitting and waste management.

Recent experience includes successfully defending a well-known chain of restaurants which was prosecuted by a local authority for an alleged overriding of a gas safety feature. In addition, Anna was successful in challenging a prosecution brought by the HSE in connection with several cases of hand-arm vibration syndrome. She also represented an individual at the police station and in the subsequent inquest following a fatal accident on a site where it had been alleged that there had been deliberate tampering with evidence. Anna is also regularly instructed by a major food group in respect of all their serious incidents which may lead to a HSE investigation and provides advice to a mining company on health and safety compliance.

Anna is a member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, the Health and Safety Lawyers’ Association and the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL). She writes articles for Kennedys’ health, safety and environmental publications and has contributed to external articles on a range of topics including the application of the health and safety sentencing guidelines and crisis management. Anna also delivers training in conjunction with various external organisations including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and Working Well Together and undertakes client-focused training.

Work highlights

  • Advised a waste management company following the prosecution of the corporate entity and two of its directors after a fatal accident on a recycling line.
  • Represented a domiciliary care provider at a number of inquests following the deaths of service users from a range of conditions. Advice in respect of the offence of wilful neglect was provided together with support with the safeguarding and Care Quality Commission investigation.
  • Acted for a food producer following an amputation incident which resulted in a prosecution. A low fine was imposed as a result of the extensive mitigation advanced during the case.
  • Advised an arm’s-length management organisation following a construction incident that resulted in a prosecution. Advice given on the application of the sentencing guidelines to a public body.
  • Acted for a business following an outbreak of legionnaires’ disease. Supporting the client with the inquest and subsequent local authority investigation.
