William Brown


William is a London-based partner of Kennedys. He qualified in England and Wales in 1999 after training with Kennedys, and became a partner in 2007.

William advises national and international (re)insurance firms and their insureds on all aspects of coverage disputes relating to property damage, engineering and construction disputes including CAR. He handles first and third party claims arising from incidents causing major losses including fire, explosion, flood, collapse, impact, machinery breakdown environmental contamination, subsidence and riot in multiple jurisdictions.

He also handles a variety of product liability claims ranging from construction to retail products including foodstuffs.

William has advised on hundred-million pound claims and complex international cases. These include the Buncefield explosion in 2005 (where claims totalled over £500m); the successful recovery of a major insurer’s damage claims following the 2011 London and Manchester riots and advising insurers on aggregation issues in relation to the 2011 Thailand floods on claims in excess of £100m.

He is currently advising the London Market on substantial third party liability claims in Egypt and Sierra Leone.

William regularly delivers lectures to insurers and reinsurers and writes numerous briefs and articles. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Insurance and a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers.

William was described as having the “Ability to understand our customers’ needs and provide bespoke service”, by the Reputation & Performance of Insurance Legal Advisors (in the London Market), Gracechurch consulting, 2013. The Gracechurch London Market Insurance Law Report 2016 described him as "...commercially aware.”

He is a Recommended Lawyer in The Legal 500 UK 2014. 

Work highlights

Instructed on behalf of a market of over 20 insurers with claims totalling over £500m arising out of the explosion at the Buncefield Oil Depot in 2005.

Advising insurers and reinsurers on aggregation, coverage and jurisdictional issues in relation to a retailer’s claims in excess of £100m arising out of the 2011 Thailand floods.

Successfully defended a £3m claim for losses arising out of food contamination, following the alleged failure of the insured’s equipment.

Oversaw the successful recovery of a major insurer’s London and Manchester riot damage claims. Worked closely with the appointed team to secure prompt and successful results.

Currently advising reinsurers on coverage issues in respect of a substantial third party claim arising out of damage to an Egyptian pipeline.
